The Catonsville Hotel

Did you know that there was a hotel in the 600 block of Catonsville known as the “Catonsville Hotel”. This hotel was in the area between the former Catonsville Elementary school and the Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe on the corner.

The former hotel building is currently used by several businesses such as Park Cleaners and Happy Feet massage.

There were several hotels in Catonsville supporting East/West travel to and from Baltimore along the Frederick Road turnpike. These included the Paradise Hotel (current location of Pizza Hut in Paradise), the Catonsville Garden Hotel (current location of G. L Shacks restaurant), the Railroad Hotel (current location of the Catonsville Firehouse), the Terminal Hotel (current location of Matthew’s restaurant), and the Five Oaks Lodge/Candle Light Inn (currently Candle Light Funeral Home by Craig Witzke).

The Catonsville Hotel was located next to the Remus Adams Blacksmith Shop, which is now occupied by the former Catonsville Elementary School. Presumably, travelers may have stayed at the Catonsville Hotel while their wagon or carriage was repaired, or their horses were re-shoed, by Remus Adams. Support of travel along Frederick Road, in the form of hotels, restaurants, taverns, stables, blacksmith etc., were a key factor in the development of the Frederick Road business corridor and the suburban town of Catonsville.
