RT 66 TV show Comes to Catonsville
On November 17, 1961, the TV series RT 66 aired an episode called “A Bridge Across Five Days”. It was filmed in Catonsville and the Baltimore Inner Harbor. It’s a story about a woman being released from Spring Grove hospital who experiences anxiety about being back in the real world.
The opening scene shows Paradise Ave and the Catonsville Short line Railroad sign and tracks (which are now part of the Catonsville Shortline trail system see picture). They’re supposedly going TO Spring Grove, but actually the TV shot shows them going the opposite direction (east).
The show contains lots of good shots of Spring Grove in 1961, including the original 1870s “Main Building” which was torn down in 1963. Also shown is the Foster Wade Building (labeled the “Psychopathic Building”) which was constructed the 1920s) and one of the Red Brick Cottage Buildings (constructed in the 1950s); both of which still exist today.
Also shown are scenes of the Baltimore streetcar system (#8), the Bethlehem Ship Yard on Key Highway (current Rusty Scupper restaurant) in the Inner Harbor, with the Domino sign in the background.
Finally, there are scenes of the 6200 block of Frederick Road in Catonsville, and a Catonsville Rowhouse neighborhood (location unknown).
Here the YouTube link to the episode, but beware, it’s a little melodramatic by today’s standards : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn7ZmzKErqo
